Harmonie ist eine Strategie

This boy is Tocotronic.

Update (2009-05-12): Unfortunately, they took it down. Here’s the original. I liked the cover much better, though.

Update (2012-05-11): They removed the linked original, too. Here’s another version:

This is another version sung by the girl from the video I wanted to embed in the first place:

The quality isn’t great but I like it a lot nevertheless.

Songs I've enjoyed recently

  • Alanis Morissette – Hands Clean. "We'll forward to a few years later." What is wrong with me?
  • Razorlight – Wire to Wire. "What is love but the strangest of feelings? / A sin you swallow for the rest of your life? / You've been looking for someone to believe in / To love you, until your eyes run dry."
  • Coldplay – Fix You. Sane people like those at Pitchfork say: "'Lights will guide you home / And ignite your bones / And I will try to fix you,' sang Martin on X&Y's "Fix You", a gag-inducing bit of motivational flotsam that came off like self-parody." Coldplay might be the musical equivalent to a chick flick, but you know what? Don't worry about it.
  • Morrissey – First of the Gang to Die. "You have never been in love, / Until you've seen the stars, / reflect in the resevoirs. // And you have never been in love, / Until you've seen the dawn rise, / behind the home for the blind."
  • Milow – Ayo Technology. This is a cover of a song by 50 Cent and Justin Timberlake, so expect a certain amount of metaphorical explicitness. The "I'm tired of using technology" line is great.
  • Bob Dylan – Girl from the North Country. "I'm a-wonderin' if she remembers me at all. / Many times I've often prayed / In the darkness of my night, / In the brightness of my day."
  • David Bowie – Heroes. "Though nothing, nothing will keep us together / We can beat them, forever and ever / Oh, we can be heroes just for one day."
  • Virginie Ledoyen – Mon Amour, Mon Ami. "Toi mon amour, mon ami / Quand je rêve c'est de toi / Mon amour, mon ami / Quand je chante c'est pour toi".

It would have been more comfortable to create a playlist at YouTube, but I just don't believe in registering accounts and managing passwords any more (there's OpenID, you know).

Muxtape is back

Some time ago, Muxtape, a minimalistic site where users could upload playlists with their favourite songs for others to enjoy, was shut down because The Music Industry didn't like the idea and they haven't been able to work out some kind of deal. Now Muxtape is back with a new concept:

[W]e're recreating the site as a platform for bands to promote and market themselves. The goal of Muxtape remains facilitating the discovery of new music, and anyone can still create a mix from the music available on the site.

There's not a lot of content yet, but of Montreal's cover of "Jimmy" is quite nice. (I couldn't figure out how to link to the song on Muxtape, so YouTube it is: cover by of Montreal, original by M.I.A. Good stuff.)

I'm a bit sceptical whether there's enough hype for Muxtape to make the new approach a success.

Daytrotter

Daytrotter invites (mostly) indie rock bands to play a session of four songs which can be downloaded for free from the site afterwards. The concept is simple but works very well. "They are all live, no overdubs, straight to tape. What you hear is what happened in the room that day." The site's around since march 2006 and they've collected an impressive archive of 1500+ songs which grows at a rate of 20 a week.

How did I manage to miss this for so long? Listen to Maritime, they're good.

HTTP music streaming

I read two posts introducing HTTP music streaming applications lately: ZX2C4 Music by Jason Donenfeld and musica by Dustin Kirkland. Storing my music collection in a central accessible place is something I wanted to do for a long time but setting up a home server has always seemed like a big waste of energy and money to me. As there are web hosting plans with unlimited space and bandwidth available for $10, uploading everything to a web server might actually be an option. Although I can't help but think that it's a pretty strange thing to do.
